The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that provides financial support to men and women in the construction field who are living with life-altering injuries. Every year the Foundation honors numerous recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was delighted to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, originally from Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil endured a massive stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the use of his left arm and the experience left his left leg majorly impaired, causing foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors worried that he would most likely become restricted to a wheelchair.
Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, causing financial tension on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. They became optimistic when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, a device that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help people with foot drop walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila were not able to afford the equipment in addition to the extensive rehab that Adil would need so he could understand how to use it.
Luckily, a specialist at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, because of the wonderful grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
