How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays a critical role as your furnace prepares to heat your house.

Here’s what occurs after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board commences running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and brings in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and tells the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and provides heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails

When your pressure switch isn’t working the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking multiple times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t functioning right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.

Your furnace will show you something is incorrect with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to present error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may see fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it transmits a fault code.
