How Should I Set My Thermostat for When I’m At Work?

For several hours a day you’re gone at work, or maybe at school. Yet your heating or air conditioning continues to run, without anybody home. This needs a lot of energy and costs you money. You can considerably lower this cost by setting the thermostat up or down as you head to work and setting it back to your desired temperature when you return home. But how much should the thermostat be adjusted?

Here’s what the Department of Energy says about thermostat changes:

You can save up to 10% a year on heating and cooling bills by simply turning your thermostat down 7°-10°F for eight hours a day compared to its typical setting. The percentage of savings from setback is better for buildings in milder climates than for those in more extreme climates.

The tinier the variation between the both temperatures, the less expensive your overall cooling bill can be. You can easily save energy during the winter by lowering the thermostat to something like 68°F while you’re awake and adjusting it down while you’re asleep or away from home. During the summer, you can follow the same approach with central air conditioning by keeping your house warmer than normal when you are away and tweaking the thermostat to a setting as warm as you can manage comfortably when you’re home and want cooling and to provide humidity control if needed.

You might have been advised that making these adjustments are not worth the time because your heating and cooling has to work even harder to get back to your desired temperature, using up your savings, but the energy department dismisses that claim, especially for heating: “A common misconception associated with thermostats is that a furnace works harder than normal to warm the space back to a comfortable temperature after the thermostat has been set back, resulting in little or no savings. In fact, as soon as your house drops below its normal temperature, it will lose energy to the surrounding environment more slowly.”

Programmable and Smart Thermostats

Despite the benefits of changing your thermostat any time you go to work, it’s very easy to miss in the rush of getting ready and on your way. This is one advantage of programmable and smart thermostats. You can direct your thermostat to automatically move to a different temperature across your standard work hours. And with a smart thermostat, you can change the temperature (or the programming schedule) from your smartphone or similar device. This is particularly helpful if you’ve neglected to adjust the setting before going on vacation.

Remember the Pets

If you own pets, consider their comfort as well. Cats and dogs with thick fur won’t be comfy with high temperatures. And pets with short fur might not be pleased with cold temperatures. The same goes for tropical birds, fish and reptiles. Considering temperature tolerances differ universally by breed and species, so review them for your pets.

More Advantages of Changing Your Thermostat for When You’re Away

  • Carbon emissions – The more you run your heating and cooling, the more carbon emissions you generate. Preserving energy decreases air pollution and greenhouse gasses.
  • HVAC Longevity – Overusing your heating and cooling can diminish its longevity and cause increased maintenance to be required. It also means the air filter will clog up sooner, making your air less clean.
